The site, currently vacant, is adjacent the Leeds Liverpool canal within the Burnley’s Weavers Triangle conservation area. The proposed mixed use development includes offices, retail units, bar/restaurant amenities as well as apartments and townhouses. The proposals incorporate existing features including a 4-storey mill and a 3m high towpath wall fronting the canal. The proposed composition, materials and elevational treatment aim to reconsider and reinterpret the historic mill buildings found within the Weavers Triangle. A hierarchy of tiered courts provide ‘access for all’ whilst linking with the Council’s “public realm strategy”. The 8m change in level across the width of the site has been harnessed, creating an undercroft carpark, thereby enabling the heart of the development to be pedestrianised and landscaped.
