This scheme is for a metal recycling plant on an industrial site by the Thames in Canning Town, London. Though the area is up-and-coming there are some security concerns that need to be addressed. The primary importance in the cladding and frame design is the need to provide robust security, as the recycled metals are very valuable and there is a continual threat from ram-raiders. Architectural concrete provides robustness whilst reinforcing the visual impression of security, locally particularly within the transport infrastructure, concrete is almost vernacular in its usage, with many local contractors experienced in its usage. The upper walls and roof of the 400sqm shed are clad in profiled insulated metal as it is practical, low weight and economic. The office building is built entirely in concrete and is expressed internally. The roof finish to the office is to be an extensive grass system, to provide a habitat for insects and in turn birds and other wild life.
