Work has just been completed on this barn conversion in an exposed location in the Ribble Valley. Stanton Andrews have been involved in the project from planning through detailed design to works on site. The brief that was developed with the owners was for a four bedroom family house that retained as much of the character of the barn, with its exposed materials and height yet cocooned them from worst excesses the weather could throw at them; yet retaining the extensive views across open fields to the south. A further challenge was to retain the original trusses, which had the bottom chord of the truss only 4m above ground floor level, without restricting the internal circulation or floor to ceiling heights. The new accommodation is located within oak ‘boxes’ that cantilever over the kitchen, a development of a concept that had been proposed for the ‘Dutton’ barn some years previously.
