The Royal Institute of British Architects and Norwich Union Insurance hosted a competition for a flood resistant house. Stanton Andrews’ proposals were shortlisted and widely published. Elevated and split level accommodation, staggered entry, and choice of materials helped ensure that the houses could still be used even in the event of the site being flooded to a depth of up to 1m. Swales within the landscape act a flood control measures, whilst providing ecological benefits, ‘wildlife corridors’ and garden screens.
