Formerly the site of a mill, this site was cleared some years in preparation for new housing. The proposed housing mix of fifty 1 and 2-bed apartments is designed to fill a perceived need in the local housing market as much of the existing housing stock is stone terraced housing. The design seeks to combine the simplicity and robustness of the demolished mill with a desire to ensure that the scale of the apartment blocks does not dominate the existing surrounding houses. The development is conceived as two stone ‘mill buildings’, with undercroft parking for residents, sitting either side of a formal, pedestrianised court. This green ‘lung’ is the key to the development as it provides secure safe play areas with good quality mature landscaping.
